Quality vs. convenience
SmallPDF is a good general-purpose PDF toolkit. If you need to compress, merge, split, or sign PDFs, it handles all of that. For PDF-to-PowerPoint conversion specifically, it uses traditional parsing that works adequately for simple documents but struggles with presentation-style layouts.
The common problems with SmallPDF conversions of slide decks: text gets split into dozens of tiny text boxes, shapes lose their formatting, and the result requires significant manual cleanup before it is usable. This is not a SmallPDF-specific issue. It is a limitation of traditional PDF parsing when applied to presentations.
PreciseDeck uses AI document understanding to analyze the visual structure of each slide rather than just parsing the PDF data. This produces cleaner text boxes, better positioning, and less manual cleanup. The tradeoff is that PreciseDeck only does one thing (PDF to PPTX), while SmallPDF is a full PDF toolkit.
If you occasionally need to convert a presentation PDF and quality matters more than having a monthly subscription to a PDF suite, PreciseDeck is the better fit. If you regularly work with all types of PDFs and conversion quality is less critical, SmallPDF's all-in-one approach may be more practical.
